Department of Physics

Teaching Associateships:

Teaching Associateships

The Department of Physics usually has several associateships available for graduate study.  The stipend for first-year TA’s is approximately $10,200 for ten months: duties consist of 20 hours per week of laboratory instruction, grading and other assigned duties. Additional Summer teaching, one lab per six weeks (~$900) may also be available. The master’s degree is normally obtained in two years. Courses totaling 6-12 units per semester are to be taken by each recipient. Fees and tuition are not waived and amount to about $917 per semester for California residents. The nonresident tuition is $339 per unit plus registration fees. Tuition waiver scholarship may be available for TAs accepted early.

The department is small and friendly; it offers instruction and research leading to the Master of Science degree. Our program is intended to prepare students for further graduate study, for employment in research and development or for teaching. Current research interests include condensed matter theory and experiment, optical and magnetic properties of fullerenes containing rare earth atoms, characterization of materials properties (amorphous semiconductors), dipolar magnetism, ferroelectric phase transitions, Raman scattering; radiation medical physics; classical and quantum field theory, general relativity; studying forces and interactions of fundamental constituents of matter with experiments using the world’s most powerful particle accelerator at Fermi National Laboratory; observational astronomy with Hubble Space Telescope and other NASA spacecraft—cataclysmic variable stars, search for black holes; scanning probe microscopies, and physics pedagogy. The seventy-four seat Downing Planetarium is in full operation and offers opportunities for physics students to assist in presenting shows.

California State University, Fresno, with an enrollment of about 20,013 is located on a 1 ,400-acre site in the northeast section of the City of Fresno.
