Graduate Program in Art
The Master of Arts degree in Art provides the opportunity for students to pursue advanced studies in the visual arts as a means of attaining accomplishment in their discipline that extends beyond that of the baccalaureate degree. The graduate program is designed for highly motivated students, emphasizing intensive, self-directed study, and small group instruction, within a chosen area of study: Studio Art (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, crafts-design, or computer art), Art History, Interior Design, or Art Education. With prior approval, programs with multiple concentrations may be arranged. Innovative courses with up-to-date information are offered by a faculty comprised of accomplished artists, designers, educators, and scholars. The M.A. program in Art challenges students to cultivate personal excellence, to recognize excellence within their discipline, and to develop a unique voice as an artist, designer, educator, or scholar, while increasing awareness of how that voice fits within the larger design of culture and society.
Requirements
The Master of Arts degree program in Art assumes preparation equivalent to the undergraduate major (B.A. in Art) at California State University-Fresno. Applicants must first complete university requirements for admission to the Division of Graduate Studies, including taking the Graduate Record Examination (G.R.E.). Once admitted to the Division of Graduate Studies of the university, applicants are required to pass the Department of Art and Design Screening Review to obtain Classified Standing as a graduate student. Graduate courses in art are also open to holders of the B.A. in Art who have been Conditionally Classified by the department of Art and Design. Students who have an undergraduate degree in Interior Design must meet the Undergraduate Art Equivalency for Interior Design prerequisite coursework. Students with non-art undergraduate degrees must meet the Art Major Undergraduate Equivalency. Second semester seniors in the undergraduate art program at CSUF may enroll in graduate (200-series) coursework in art subject to the approval of the instructor. For specific departmental requirements, please contact the graduate program coordinator. For general requirements, see the Division of Graduate Studies.
