Requests for Textbooks in Alternate Format for Fall 2009
STUDENT NEWSLETTER: FALL 2009
Welcome back! The fall semester begins August 24th, and I wanted to welcome you and send a reminder of the “to do” items that could make your semester easier.
I also wanted to welcome you to our offices at the Henry Madden Library. By the week of August 11th, we will be located on the first floor, south wing, next to the elevators, Suite 1202. We have additional testing rooms and an expanded Assistive Technology Lab with a separate entrance. When your back on campus please drop by and visit. Our official “Open House” will be hosted in mid-October.
I wanted to announce some staff changes. Cari Calad is our new part-time Administrative Support Assistant and can assist you with your SCOUT service needs and other questions about services offered by SSD. If you will be using SCOUT services for Fall 09 semester, please call today and schedule a short appointment to meet with Cari and set-up those services. As always our front desk staff and lab technicians are trained and ready to help with general questions.
For those of you receiving Reading Accommodations (textbooks in alternate format), new policies will be put in place and a new policy and procedure form must be signed before you can receive your books. Please plan on meeting with Rima Nijmeddin, Reading Accommodations Coordinator and she will review the changes with you. If you have reading accommodations and have not yet submitted the yellow sheet for professors letters, to identify your request for reading services, please do so immediately. If you have not notified Rima within two weeks of school starting, you will be required to submit a separate “Request for Textbooks in Alternate Format” form for each textbook request (copies available online).
You are now required to meet with your Disability Management Specialist at least once each academic year to maintain your accommodations. If you have not met with your new DMS or are not sure who you are assigned to, please contact our office today and make an appointment to meet with them soon, 278-2811. The Disability Management Specialists (DMS) on staff are Jeanette Johnson (Jennie) and Carlos Diaz.
First Two Weeks: In an effort to serve you quickly during the start of the fall semester, the DMS will be accepting drop-in appointments only for the first two weeks for current students, so drop by anytime if you need assistance. New students needing initial intake to receive services will still be regularly scheduled during that time.
We look forward to working with each of you during the fall semester. Please see the attached “To Do” list to help you plan your fall semester. The commitment of the SSD staff is to provide the best academic support service that our resources and collective energies allow. If you experience any difficulty during the semester, we urge you to let us know as soon as possible. By working together, we can solve problems that may arise.
Sincerely,
Janice L. Brown

Requests for Textbooks in Alternate Format for Fall 2009
RE: Requests for Textbooks in Alternate Format for Fall 2009
Message from Rima Nijmeddin, Testing/Reading Accommodations Coordinator:
If you are a student with reading accommodations and would like to request books in alternate format for the fall 2009 semester, please register on time and submit your yellow "Schedule Form and Professor Letters" as soon as possible by either in person, fax, or email. Indicate that you would like textbooks in alternate format.
Textbook requests may take up to 8 weeks so if you have not already turned in your request please do so as soon as possible. The sooner the requests are turned in, the better chance you have of receiving your books the first day of school.
A few things to remember when picking up your books:
1) Be sure to bring your receipts when picking up your books. I need proof of purchase before handing anything over.
2) Make an appointment with me to pick up your books. There may be forms to sign and may take a few minutes. You are more than welcome to walk in but just know that I may not have everything ready and will take some extra time to prepare.
