Upper Division Writing Exam (UDWE)

The UDWE is...

  • Given five times each year
  • Always on a Saturday
  • From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Is comprised of two 60-minute essays (and one 10-minute break)

It is designed to assure that your writing skills are at the upper-division level.

Any undergraduate student who has completed English 5A and 5B, or English 10 with a grade of C or better AND have completed 60 units may take the exam in order to meet the Upper Division Writing Skills requirement. In order to graduate on schedule, it is strongly recommended that this exam be taken soon after 60 units have been completed ( and at least two semesters prior to graduation). The alternative is to successfully complete an upper division course with a "W" designation (some majors require the class). Graduate students should consult Graduate Studies regarding the graduate-level writing proficiency requirement.

SPECIAL NOTE: Students may take the exam a maximum of 2 times. If you fail the exam two times, then a "W" class is required to fulfill the writing requirement.

UDWE CREDIT: An enrolled California State University, Fresno undergraduate student (but not post-baccalaureate/graduate), may receive 1 unit of credit (English 100W) for passing this exam. The unit of credit is not automatic but may be requested by the examinee on the day of the test. In order to avoid extra fees, a student must be enrolled at Fresno State the semester the unit of credit is to be posted. If the proper form is completed on the day of the test, the unit will be posted to a student's file on

1) the registration cycle of the exam (provided the add/drop period has not ended before the scores are posted)

2) the registration cycle following the one in which the UDWE passed.

Also, as with all other credits added to a program of study, if the additional unit moves a student from one fee category to another, the student will be billed accordingly. Nonresident students will be billed nonresident tuition for the additional unit.

UDWE PASSING SCORE: 10-12

Proctoring Services

Local students taking classes or training through other colleges and institutions by correspondence or other long-distance methods often are required to take exams. The Office of Testing Services at Fresno State agrees to provide supervision and a secure testing environment for those exams.

Usually this involves a correspondence or online class through a university, but various types of organizations make use of this service. The Testing Office has proctored exams for institutions around the country, and welcomes international organizations as well.

Tests are proctored by appointment only in the Office of Testing Services at Fresno State. The office is located in the Family and Food Sciences Building, Room 110. A daily parking permit is required during the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions. The parking fee is $3.00 at the parking meter.

Children are not allowed in the testing rooms and cannot be left unsupervised while on campus. Please make arrangements for your children before you come for your test session.

Schedule a Test for Proctoring

Proctoring services are by appointment only. To schedule a test for proctoring, please call 559 278-2457.
Saturday testing is provided once a month for those who cannot come during the week.
Before scheduling a test for proctoring, you must arrange with your school of enrollment to have the necessary test materials sent to the Fresno State Testing Office.

Your college or institution will then send your exam or information to us directly. Because of the high volume of exams we proctor, you will not be notified when it arrives --- you will need to contact us to confirm that your exam has been received. We will accept exams via e-mail to lindaensch@csufresno.edu

Cost

Students needing proctoring services for another college or institution are responsible for paying $40.00, per exam, at the time of testing in the form of cashier's check or money order made payable to Fresno State. Personal checks or cash will not be accepted.

On Your Scheduled Test Date

Come prepared to your test, both in terms of allotting enough time and bringing the necessary items:

  • Arrive early.
  • Bring a valid, government issued photo ID.
  • Bring $40.00 payment via money order or cashier's check for proctoring services.
  • Bring $3.00 for a day-use parking permit (and allot time to park), as all cars parked at Fresno State must display a parking permit. You can purchase your day-use parking permit at the kiosks located in each parking lot.
Services for Faculty

An instructor-operated scanner is available during office hours (Mon-Fri; 8:00-5:00 pm) in the Test Office. Scannable forms include Scantron #882 and #883 (Short Essay).

Special Testing Accommodations
